Socialise on facebook - improve your memory and have a laugh!

I have just got 25 new facebook friends this week, that's pretty good! I love viewing everyone's picture photo albums! 24 of these friends I knew at my two secondary schools - reunion time ;)

Facebook is not just another web 2.0 application - it is the way to communicate with people you have known so you can 3 dimensionalise your life: it's the internet equivalent of "This Is Your Life" and it is great! I went to four schools and two colleges and have "met up with" people from all but my first school where I simply cannot remember anyone's name as I was only 5 then. I suppose my next step is to link up with forgotten relatives (who are all too religious to do anything internet so no go there) and the many people from my last 18 years of teaching. Some of my first pupils whom I taught as 11 year olds are now left university and teaching or married themselves! It's an amazing way to keep in communication with the people you have worked with over the years.

Make your own facebook profile more dynamic for your friends by adding some nice portraits and if possible a childhood, teenage, family and some school photos. This helps folk's memories soar back through the years! And makes more sense of who you are now. This week I will be digging out old school photos!

Facebook is all about fun! Sure you can get as many friends as you can in order to advertise to them but that is really a waste of what web 2.0 has to offer. Just wade in and enjoy the applications, games, chat, send some messages. I am just the same, facebook or no, but I do feel part of a much wider horizon now than just the walls of my boring flat and the boring flats opposite! No matter where I go or what I do, the concept of me means something to my friends on facebook - in fact, I actually feel like I want to achieve more online because of this!

So my latest project is to work out how to upload a band CD we made to MySpace - this gives my friends a more 3D idea of who I am. Bravo to Frances Pearce, flautist, who has developed a terrific website about herself as flute teacher. I hope she won't mind me sharing this- www.francesthornton.co.uk
I will go and ask her now! Also Frances has a facebook group called Flauto - fab!
Later I will video myself playing piano and upload this to YouTube. This will in turn encourage me to compose some songs specially and record/video those and upload them!

What could you add? Record yourself reading your own poetry! Photo your kids art pictures! I deeply regret having taught piano over 17 years yet not having videoed my pupils playing! Now is the age of proud self publishing where to promote yourself is hip and no longer an embarrasment called "Vanity Publishing" go on get out there and be creative! We are all interested, we are your Public! These endeavours make the internet viable and 3D so publish all you can - be original, be daring, be surprising, be worldwideweb!

And yes this week I need to go explore Twitter, goodness, I am fast falling into the tech world! I like web 2.0 because you can have a laugh, share your crazy moments with folk and communicate across the world. Webcam even gives us the opportunity now to chat and see each other. Obviously all this communication will accelerate over the next decade. Free phone calls over the net - well hurrah, that's good thinking! The internet is in the making, now, today, by you, by me, we are developing this phenomenom daily to our design. So go ahead and share your pictures, poetry, old school reports, shout all from the rooftops!

Feel free to comment below on what YOU personally like about facebook and similar websites, any you recommend, put a link to whatever you wish or just share a funny story, or tell us how web 2.0 (social media) is changing YOUR life! Share or be square ;)

Have a great week!
